It’s really helpful to be aware of what fears are holding you back.

Here’s a little story which might help.

I have some fearful thinking about cows.

Yes, I do mean the ones that people get milk from.

The brown ones, the black and white ones and even the jerseys.

But most of all the bulls.

You see, a few years ago, I was chased across a field by some cows.

I was walking on my own, when I suddenly became aware that the bull in the field had instigated a charge.

All the cows, calves and that bull started walking quite rapidly towards me, mooing in an angry way.

Well, it sounded angry to me anyway.

Just in the nick of time, I managed to climb over a wall into a field full of docile sheep – PHEW!

But a little further down, I had to climb back into the original field to get back onto the path.

Luckily I did this quickly because the cows had spotted my manoeuvre and were coming towards me again.

I was only a few metres up the next field when I turned round to see the cows crowded around the gate I had just passed though.

Lucky escape!!

Anyway, back to my fear of cows.

I had a ‘negative’ experience with cows and my mind has held onto that because it thinks that’s a way to keep me safe.

I think fearful thoughts about cows and I feel fearful feelings as a result.

Because I am aware of this, I can mostly navigate a life with cows in it and it does not hinder me too much.

But are you aware of the things your brain learnt to be afraid of.

It might be speaking up.
It might be saying, ‘no’.
It might be going to busy places.

It doesn’t really matter what experience taught you to be afraid but it is important to know when your system has gone awry.

Fortunately your system is built to provide that information.

It tells you what fears you have by making you feel afraid.

Afraid feeling = awry system caught up in fearful thinking.

What fears you have are not to do with the thing you are afraid of.

They are to do with your old conditioned thinking about that thing.

Your clever system is letting you know about that old conditioned thinking.

It doesn’t really matter what you are afraid of, it’s all the same.

But in this area, a little awareness goes a long way.

(By the way, if there is something you really need to get out of the way of, your body is pretty nifty at sorting that out.)

Once you know what fears are holding you back, there is an opportunity to change.

Give yourself a moment for the thinking to pass.

Then you’ll be connected to your intuition and you’ll really know what to do next.
